Well, many people feel the need to be in a relationship and like you mentioned the feeling of being a complete looser in school, many people online who search for relationships online at such a young age and hit on people, for example hitting on you, they feel like you might somehow be interested in them. Now with our society so many people feel the "privilage" of being able to be in a relationship and seeing girls with a boyfriend all over school, and them being too insecure about themselves to present themselves to a guy so they turn to the internet. Than they creat this personality that they always wish they would have in reality and live this ideolistic life online, you're lucky you're not like that. Don't get confused by them either, they are just really insecure.
