Ice/Water Dispenser not working properly, Help!?

We have a GE side by side that has been working fine since we moved in a year ago. So at first I thought nothing was working when we got home. The switch would not come on for the water or either of the ice options when we pressed in the dispenser lever. Ice was definitely being made, so that wasn't an issue. Then I put some gusto into pushing in the level/dispenser toward the top of it and it started coming out, both the ice and water. I know I shouldn't have to normally press that hard to get it to work. What do you think it could be and how do I fix it? It's a GSL25JFPEBS.
